The Dallas Mavericks are one game away from advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals this year. Kyrie Irving has played exceptionally and shown why he is still one of the best guards in the entire NBA. His time in Dallas this year has been great for both sides.

However, before deciding to return with the Mavericks this previous offseason, the point guard revealed that he was interested in playing with former teammate LeBron James again.

“He’s a great friend of mine, a great brother of mine. We obviously played together [in Cleveland]. Everybody knows our history. But there were so many different factors in between. When it comes to business decisions, you have to ask the GMs, the presidents why certain things didn’t work out.”

While the breakup between Irving and James wasn’t great, the two sides clearly still hold a strong bond. A hypothetical world where the two teamed up again is undeniably an interesting one.

The 32-year-old guard averaged 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game this year. He has evolved into the perfect running mate with superstar Luka Doncic. In hindsight, staying in Dallas was probably the best decision for Irving.

“Dallas welcomed me with open arms. For me, it wasn’t time to think about the ‘what ifs.’ It was time for me to put my best foot forward. That’s what I did. It’s hard to think of the ‘what ifs,’ the allure, the thoughts of it.”

While it seems unlikely the two players will ever suit up together again, it is interesting to imagine how far they could go in the playoffs again.
