Lakers need to trade Russell Westbrook, says Kendrick Perkins

The Los Angeles Lakers acquisition of Russell Westbrook over the offseason hasn’t yielded the results they hoped. On the verge of Christmas, the Lakers sit below .500 with a 16-17 record and the sixth seed in the West. As a result, some say that the Lakers need to trade Russell Westbrook, one of them being Kendrick Perkins.

“The person that [the Lakers] probably could move, or should move, is Russell Westbrook. I don’t know if it’ll happen, though, because of his contract.”

Moreover, Kendrick Perkins takes time on First Take to discuss his issues with the Lakers and LeBron James’ post-game interview after last night’s blowout loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Perkins explains how the Lakers’ excuses, like injuries and Covid-related issues, are no different from those faced by the rest of the league.

“LeBron, you’re my dog, I been known you since the seventh grade. But that interview? That ain’t it. For the simple fact that the whole league has been battling this whole situation. Covid protocols, injuries, or whatever the case may be.”

Rusell Westbrook averages 19.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and eight assists in his first season with the Lakers. Los Angeles acquired Russ in a massive trade with the Washington Wizards before the season. This year, Russ has been active in every game despite missed time by the surrounding superstars, LeBron, and AD. So even though LA hasn’t been successful this season, do the Lakers need to trade Russell Westbrook?

Despite having 33 games already under the team’s belt this season, the big three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook have only played 15 games together. In those 15 games, the trio has netted a record of 8-7 when on the court together.

The Lakers’ big three have only played 291 minutes together throughout those games, with an Offensive Rating of 109.9 and a Defensive Rating of 106.1. This stat implies that Russ, AD, and LeBron perform below the league average on offense and above average on defense when on the floor together.

There is plenty of talent on the Lakers’ roster to give them the ability to contend for a title come playoff time. Even teammate Dwight Howard believes so. However, Anthony Davis is out for at least a month with a knee injury. Now, it’s uncertain how soon they will be able to start building chemistry on the court together again. Perhaps the Lakers will trade Russ if the team’s struggles continue. Interestingly enough, the Lakers are reportedly in the market for another blockbuster trade.
