Luka Doncic will be eligible to sign the infamous supermax contract this summer with the Mavericks. When asked about it, he simply replied, “I think you know the answer.” This suggests that Luka Doncic plans to sign the supermax.
Luka will be entering his 4th year in the league next year. So far, he’s been nothing short of spectacular. His latest performance in this year’s playoffs showcased just how special he is. He averaged 35.7 points and 10.3 assists per game in the playoffs. The Mavericks lost in 7 to the Clippers in the first round, but it was no fault of Luka’s.
This is the 2nd year in a row the Mavericks have gone out in the first round of the playoffs. Of course, they will offer Luka the supermax this summer; their priority will be finding the right pieces to surround him. So far, they have struggled to do so. The trade they made for Kristaps Porzingis hasn’t served its purpose as Porzingis has disappointed during his time in Dallas. New reports have surfaced that Porzingis is frustrated with his current role on the team.
A player who may be important in the future is Tim Hardaway Jr. He showed his importance in the playoffs providing a solid scoring punch beside Luka. He recently hinted at a desire to stay in Dallas.
Things will get harder for Dallas once Luka’s supermax kicks in. At that point, they will have to get very creative when building a team around him. But talents like Luka don’t come around too often, so Dallas absolutely must maximize this window.
