With the G-League bubble well underway, the G-league’s best players are beginning to land deals with NBA teams. Former Westchester Knicks guard Myles Powell is the latest example, as The Athletic’s Sham Charania announced Wednesday that Powell would be joining the Milwaukee Bucks on a two-way contract.
This deal comes as no surprise, as Powell has been one of the G-Leagues best players this season. Powell is averaging 17.8 points and 4 assists per game this season. He is shooting an absurd 44.6% from beyond the arc. That clip is 5th-best in the entire G-League (minimum 40 attempts).
Offensively, there is little that the former Creighton guard can’t do. As demonstrated by his shooting splits, Powell is lethal from anywhere on the floor. A crafty pick and roll player, Powell forces players to go over screens. He is also a threat to hit shots coming off screens and knocking down shots in transition. He has also demonstrated he can be a secondary playmaker, as his assist percentage ranks as one of the best in the league.
G-League players performing well in the bubble will begin to see offers come their way as the G-League season comes to a close. The Rockets already announced that they would recall guard Kevin Porter Jr. after the All-Star break. Now, Powell will have the opportunity to crack the Bucks roster on a two-way deal.
What Powell Brings to the Bucks
Powell will fit in nicely given Milwaukee’s current play style. With a system built around Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer is looking to surround Antetokounmpo with as many perimeter shooters as possible. Powell will be used primarily as a spot-up shooter on the outside, should he be called up to the team.
Powell will also help the Bucks as a crafty ball handler. While Antetokounmpo is a spectacular player in many regards, his best skill is using his athleticism to get to the hoop in transition. Powell can be a primary ball-handler and create for others in the half-court.
