The Los Angeles Lakers have struggled this season. They’ve lost four straight and are currently the sixth seed in the Western Conference with a record of 16-17. The Lakers’ slow start has caused trade rumors for their current roster. With it being the oldest team in the league, two young stars have been on the radar of the purple and gold.

According to Shams Charania, the Lakers are eyeing Ben Simmons and Jerami Grant for a possible trade. Both are young wings that can provide excellent defense and length.

“When you look at a guy like Ben Simmons, they’d love to get their hands on a guy like him. Jerami Grant, those are the types of guys that they need on this team. Young, 6’9?, 6’10”, athletic wings, can handle the ball, can score, can pass.”

Ben Simmons wanting out of Philadelphia is no secret. The All-Star guard has been clamoring for a trade ever since the 76ers lost to the Atlanta Hawks in the Conference Semi-Finals last season. Simmons would provide outstanding defense to a Lakers team that has struggled on that side of the ball. Simmons would also give the Lakers another on-ball playmaker alongside LeBron James. However, Simmons has garnered interest from multiple teams around the league.

Jerami Grant, on the other hand, provides another scoring option to a team that hasn’t been able to support its superstars this year. Grant has broken out as a reliable scorer in Detroit. He averaged 22 ppg last year and averages just over 20 points this year. Due to a thumb injury, he’s currently sitting out.

What assets do the Lakers have to trade?

Since last season, Talen Horton-Tucker has been in trade rumors and could be a key piece in any trade to match salaries as he makes around ten million dollars per year on his new contract. Austin Reaves is another player who could be traded. Reaves has come on as a vital part of the Lakers rotation. The Lakers could also try to part with Russell Westbrook, who hasn’t necessarily worked out for the Lakers so far.

As they’ve done over the past few years, the Lakers will do anything they can to make the team better. With LeBron James turning 37 on December 30th, roster moves need to be made for Los Angeles to turn their season around and compete for a championship.
