In Oklahoma, Russell Westbrook decided to call Kawhi Leonard, proposing a team up in their hometown Los Angeles. The proposal gave Kawhi the idea to create his own team-up, which did not involve Russell Westbrook.
Kawhi Leonard’s contract was over, so he had to make a decision. Russell, who became a father at the time, began thinking about leaving Oklahoma. Knowing about Kawhi’s contractual situation, there was an opportunity, and Russell took a shot.
“Teaming up with Leonard would be the fastest way there, so (Westbrook) placed the call…Leonard then called Westbrooks teammate in Oklahoma City, Paul George, and told him he’d rather team up with him.”Ramona Shelburne
However, Kawhi had different plans. He learned Russell wanted to leave Oklahoma, so he decided to contact his teammate, Paul George. As history shows, Paul George accepted his proposal, and both players joined the Los Angeles Clippers. Both went to LA, so Russell left alone, asked for a trade, joining the Houston Rockets.
Eventually, the Rockets traded Russell to Washington, where he spent the past season. However, Westbrook left in a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, finally returning to his hometown. As it currently stands, both Kawhi and Russ play in Los Angeles, one in the Los Angeles Clippers and the other in the Los Angeles Lakers, where fans will hope to see the new Battle of LA with a new rivalry.
Two years later, Kawhi has a player option. He needs to make a decision again, to remain in Los Angeles or to leave again. However, according to Adrian Wojnarowski, it’s most likely he’ll stay there.
“Expectation is he will return to the Clippers. The kind of contract is unclear”Adrian Wojnarowski on Kawhi’s future
Despite this, there have been multiple reports on Kawhi leaving the Clippers to join teams like the Golden State Warriors or the Dallas Mavericks.
Some people claim he’ll sign a minimum contract because of his injuries and join the Lakers. The possibilities are endless, and as Free Agency begins, decisions will take place.
