The San Antonio Spurs front office and forward LaMarcus Aldridge mutually agreed to part ways Wednesday afternoon. The news was first reported by NBA Insider Tim MacMahon.
A fifteen-year veteran, Aldridges’ departure from the Spurs was only a matter of time. Aldridge has appeared in 21 games so far this season. He is averaging 13.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. He is shooting 46.4% from the field and 36% from three on a career-high 3.6 attempts per game.
The Spurs have been actively working to trade Aldridge since the news was announced. Aldridges’ contract shouldn’t be too difficult to move. Aldridge is in the final year of a two-year, $50 million deal that he signed with the Spurs back in 2017. This extension was in addition to the four-year contract he signed with San Antonio in 2015.
Aldridge can still contribute on a contending team, just in a limited capacity. As demonstrated by his shooting splits, he can step out to the perimeter to hit shots, spacing the floor for other players. He also loves to operate out of the post, where he consistently hits his patented turnaround jumper over smaller defenders.
