Both Shaquille O’Neal and Wilt Chamberlin are two of the best players in the history of basketball. The two big men defined their generations, respectively, and found ways to solidify themselves as greats.
On a recent episode of “The Big Podcast With Shaq” featuring Julius Erving, the question came about who would win in a fictional one-versus-one situation between O’Neal and Chamberlain. The former quickly jumped in to make it clear that he would win.
“Want me to answer this for you Doc? I would have bust Wilt’s a–! You know why? Because I would have looked over and seen him playing with my idol and that would’ve pissed me the f–k off.”Shaquille O’Neal
While we will never be able to see those two greats square off in their prime, it still is a fun hypothetical situation. Both O’Neal and Chamberlain are two of the most decorated athletes in the history of basketball.
O’Neal was an absolute force at the rim with his unique mixture of size and athleticism. When he got the ball in the paint, it was almost a guarantee that he would score. The seven-foot-one big man played in the NBA for 19 years.
He ended his career with an MVP award, 15 All-Star appearances, and four championships. Throughout his career, he averaged 23.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and was an absolute menace when it came to protecting the rim.
Meanwhile, Chamberlin was putting up stats that look ridiculous to this day. In his 1045 games played, the big man averaged 30.1 points, 22.9 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game. His dominance in his career was nothing short of magic.
Who would come out on top in a hypothetical matchup? Who is to know? It would have been a wonderful thing for every basketball fan to see though.
