The Athletics’ Michael Lee Disgusted by ABC’s ‘Do It For Kobe’ Promo

Feb 1, 2020; Sacramento, California, USA; A Los Angeles Lakers fan holds up a Do it for Kobe sign during the first quarter against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

The Athletics’ Michael Lee took to Twitter today to express some displeasure with the ongoing reaction to NBA legend Kobe Bryants death.

Lee tweeted in response to a Twitter thread related to the topic.

The tweet refers to ABC, the home of the NBA Finals matchup between the Lakers and the Miami Heat, running promotional ads with the slogan do it for Kobe. There’s a chance that ABC intended for it to be nothing more than a cheerful, uplifting catchphrase, but some saw it differently.

Since Bryants tragic death in January of this year, hes been honored in nearly every way possible, and rightfully so. Hes an all-time great on and off the basketball court who served as an inspiration for countless people worldwide. Tributes to Kobe are great and almost always do more good than bad. After all, they help us remember the incredible life Bryant lived and the legacy he left behind.

But as Lee alluded to, some of the gestures seem performative and part of a marketing strategy.
