Rumors about Donovan Mitchell potentially leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers has been brewing for months now. However, with the end of this season getting closer, the rumor mill has begun to heat up again.

According to insider Marc Stein, teams around the league are monitoring his contract situation with the Cavs.

“Mitchell will be entering the final guaranteed year of his current contract next season if there’s no extension, leading to a growing belief among rival teams that the Cavaliers will be forced to trade Mitchell in coming months if they cannot come to terms with him an extension.”

Marc Stein said in a recent article

If Mitchell were to enter the market, he would draw attention from all around the league. He has remained one of the most explosive guards in the league and would benefit any team with his two-way skillset.

The 27-year-old guard is averaging 26.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game this season. The Cavaliers may have to make the tough decision of choosing between Mitchell or Darius Garland as their lead guard. If that were to be the case, the one who wasn’t staying in Cleveland would garner plenty of attention.

“We think he will extend. I think if you listen to him talk, he loves the city. He loves the situation in Cleveland because our players are very young and we’re just kind of putting the core together that he’s clearly the biggest part of.”

The Cavs are currently sitting in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. There is no denying that this team’s playoff success will drastically shape the future of the organization for years to come.
