NBA players harshly criticized USA track and field athlete Noah Lyles after the latter made fun of the NBA players for referring to themselves as world champions. The comments were made on Sunday by the track star. Lyles became the first athlete to win a double championship since Usain Bolt at the Budapest World Athletics Championship.

The 26-year-old Lyles quickly clarified that while he is the global champion for fighting against players from different nations. He claimed the NBA is a league exclusively representing teams in Canada and the USA. He, therefore, treats NBA players’ claims that they are the global champs with a grain of salt. Drake also made comments disagreeing with Lyles’s claims about the NBA.

“The thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA finals, and they have ‘World champion’ on their heads. World champion of what? The United States?”

Haliburton was asked about the incident at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He revealed that Lyles’s remarks weren’t well-considered. According to the point guard, Lyles’ comment should be ignored because the NBA is one of the top leagues in the world.

The NBA does not only have stars from the United States but also other nations. Joel Embiid of Cameroon, Giannis Antetokounmpo of Greece, and Nikola Jokic of Serbia have all dominated the sport in the last few years. Jokic led the Nuggets to a championship last season. Antetokounmpo won a title back in 2021. Meanwhile, Embiid won MVP last year and remains one of the best players in the NBA.

In the meantime, Lyles quickly emphasized that his comments were intended to highlight his accomplishment rather than disparaging any team sports after getting criticism from the NBA’s greatest players. Lyles further exhorted athletes from all disciplines to unite and show a sense of unity. In addition, Lyles revealed his admiration for athletes from many sports.
