Victor Wembanyama was disappointed with how Team France performed in the FIBA Cup, so he’s decided to take matters into his own hands. The rookie chose to sit out on the event due to possible health issues that could come up should he play.
Victor Wembanyama Will Return To His Home Country For Paris Olympics
The San Antonio Spurs power forward chose to rejoin the French national basketball team to bring his team the win, L’Équipe states.
He expresses his disappointment with his team’s results in the FIBA World Cup. The 19-year-old wants to show what he can do while helping the team get the gold medal.

However, he does concede that he shouldn’t judge too much since he wasn’t there in the first place. Furthermore, the event had many stars that he might be unable to take on.
“I watched the FIBA World Cup, and the result was very disappointing. I have no judgement to make, I was not on the team, and it is in the hands of top-level players.”

Despite that, Wembanyama still hopes to do something for the team during the following year’s Olympics in Paris, France.
This follows Team France’s 18th-place result during FIBA’s World Cup. The rookie is clearly unhappy with how the team played, considering they were third in the last competition in 2019.
This loss affected Team France’s placement in the FIBA rankings by four places. They were formerly the fifth highest in the world; now they’re down to the ninth.
It’s Looking Bright For The Rookie
Wembanyama is already showing tons of potential. The Spurs chose him as the first overall pick of the 2023 NBA draft.
While the power forward hasn’t played in any NBA games yet, he did help his country’s team qualify for the event.
In the four games that the 19-year-old played in, he averaged 19 points, 8.3 rebounds and one assist.
With the 2023-2024 season, the rookie will get even more opportunities to shine with the Spurs.
