The New England Patriots beat the Cleveland Browns with a dominant display on Sunday. Patriots rookie Mac Jones was by far the best quarterback on the pitch during the 45-7 New England victory, which has led Rex Ryan to make a bold claim. The former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach proclaiming that ‘Baker Mayfield is not an elite quarterback.’

Ryan spoke on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ and did not hold back in his Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield review.

“When I said Baker Mayfield is overrated as hell. I told the truth. It’s only based off 30 years coaching experience, being around the game all my life. I know what an elite quarterback is and I know what one isn’t. Baker Mayfield is not an elite quarterback.”

Fans & media will constantly scrutinize Baker Mayfield’s credentials to become an elite quarterback, having come into the league as the no.1 overall pick in 2018. With an overall win-loss record of 28-27 for his career. Rex Ryan has pointed to his inability to overcome outside factors in stopping him from taking the next step in his career.

“Baker Mayfield doesn’t lose games for you. But he doesn’t win games for you either. His rankings are in the twenties in almost every single category. He doesn’t throw well against man coverage. He’s a guy that throws the ball once you get open. He doesn’t throw with timing, anticipation. That’s not Baker Mayfield! He has to have everything right to perform.”

In Sunday’s defeat in New England, Baker Mayfield could only throw for 73 yards, throwing one touchdown & one interception. Furthermore, he currently ranks 25th in the NFL in quarterback rating for the season so far, having failed to ever finish inside the top 10 in his previous three seasons in the league (10th, 19th & 23rd).

Mayfield also added to an unwanted record on Sunday, which Ryan believes speaks volumes about his quarterback ability.

“An elite quarterback can win when we don’t have other things. So they get out-rushed by 50 yards. Everytime this has happened to the Cleveland Browns, Baker Mayfield. He’s 0-14, so to me that shows he’s not the guy. Just because you are taken first overall, it doesn’t mean you are elite. It means someone thinks you could be elite.”

The Cleveland Browns are bottom of the AFC North. They have lost four of their last six games, having won three of their opening four in the 2021 season. They have a talented roster of players on both sides of the football. However, the primary question to answer now is, will this team continue with Baker Mayfield at quarterback? Or will they look to find a quarterback better suited to take the team to the next level?
