The chemistry between Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr has been questioned since Beckham Jr was traded to Cleveland back in 2019. Today, Odell Beckham Jr is one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the NFL, and former Pro Bowl wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson believes Baker Mayfield is wasting him.

The Super Bowl XXXVII champion spoke on ESPN’s ‘KJM’ show and did not waiver his support for Odell Beckham Jr.

“They are not going to be successful if they don’t get him (OBJ) the ball. You cannot have Odell Beckham in a game and only get three targets. That doesn’t work. They’ve got to figure out how to utilize this man. This man is terrific. He’s healthy, done everything to get back on track. They gotta get him the damn ball.”

In the Cleveland Browns’ last game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Odell Beckham had just two receptions for 20 yards of offense. This 20 yards marked the seventh time he and Baker Mayfield have been in the twenties in their 26 games together, once every three and a half games. To put that in context, Odell Beckham Jr was in the twenties just three times in his 59 games with the New York Giants.

In his (Baker Mayfield) mind, he’s thinking, ‘I’m locking on to OBJ so much’ because everybody is saying that. When that is not really the case. So what he wants to try and prove to people is. ‘I can be a top notch quarterback without utilizing my main target. So rather than look at no.13 and force 13 the ball. He’s getting off of him without plays fully developing.

The two players being together on the same team is not helping either of their career’s and Johnson believes should things continue as is, it will begin to work against Mayfield especially.

“When you have a number one wide receiver. And you decide ‘I’m going to scan the field but when I get to his side, I’m going to look over him and try throw the ball to somebody else to have success’. Therefore you will not have success. You will not get the money that you’re looking for. And there will be another quarterback in that position. If you don’t decide to start utilizing this individual.”

Odell Beckham Jr can be a top-five receiver in the NFL but not playing alongside Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield may lead a team to a Super Bowl but not with Odell Beckham Jr as his number one target. Odell in Cleveland is a waste. And there are more than a few teams in the league that he could transition into a Super Bowl contender. Just a question of who wants to make a move.

  1. […] Johnson has discussed this issue before, emphasizing the oddities behind Odell Beckham’s uneventful Browns career. To his point, Odell Beckham hasn’t shown much promise since arriving in Cleveland. Compared to the flashes of superstardom he displayed in New York, he has suffered a steep dropoff. While injuries have undoubtedly played a role in that development, it still stands to question how much blame Cleveland’s quarterback shares in it. […]
