The New York Giants have not had a fun season, to put it lightly. Despite their moves in the offseason and the efforts made in years past, they haven’t been able to re-establish themselves. On the heels of an embarrassing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, many have cast further doubts on the organization. One figure that has become subject to criticism is the Giants’ recently dismissed offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

Players had grown frustrated with Garrett’s playcalling. His instruction of the offense left receivers wanting more involvement. Having scored only ten points last game, it doesn’t take much to discern an issue for New York’s attack. When asked about the team’s offensive struggles, head coach Joe Judge responded with the following.

“We have to do a better job of putting our players in a position to make plays […] As a player, there are some things I would be frustrated about as well […] I have faith in all the people on our team: players, coaches, everything. But look, well assess everything as a team and make any move we need to going forward.

The Giants have fallen to a woeful 3-7 record on the year. With another lost season all but guaranteed, it begs to question what further changes should and will come in the offseason. Those answers may depend on how the G-Men close out the year. Freddie Kitchens will take over as the interim offensive coordinator.

Jason Garrett as the Giants offensive coordinator

New York hired Jason Garrett as the new offensive coordinator in 2020. The move shocked many across the NFL since he had just come off a downtrodden campaign with the Dallas Cowboys. Though the optics didn’t lean favorably for the Giants, the results yielded would be the ultimate judge of this union.

The Giants rank in the bottom third of the league in yards and scoring in the last two seasons. While that may not be entirely on Garrett, he does hold some responsibility for it. Should the season continue at this rate, I would expect the Giants to make significant changes, most prominently with the coaching staff. More may stand on the horizon for the roster and the front office.
