With roughly $11 million in cap space entering the offseason, the Seattle Seahawks front office began to make moves to free up some additional cash for the upcoming season. The Seahawks released Carlos Dunlap early Monday morning, saving them $14 million in cap space. NFL Insider Adam Schefter first reported the move.
The Seahawks are reportedly still looking to bring back Dunlap on a cheaper contract. In the final year of a three-year, 40 million dollar deal, Dunlap was signed with the Bengals back in 2018. The Bengals traded Dunlap to Seattle in October 2020.
Drafted in 2010, Dunlap has been a solid edge rusher in the league for eleven years now. He has registered 87.5 career sacks and 109 career tackles for loss. In eight games with the Seahawks this past season, Dunlap registered 14 total tackles and five sacks.
The $14 million saved from Dunlaps’ release will be fully utilized by the Seahawks, who have several players to resign this offseason. The most notable names are linebacker K.J Wright, running back Chris Carson, and defensive end Bruce Irvin. The Seahawks also stand to lose two key pieces of their secondary, with cornerbacks Shaquil Griffin and Quinton Dunbar both being unrestricted free agents as of this offseason.
