The search for a new name continues for the Washington Football team. On Monday morning, team president Jason Wright stated the organization’s search. In that statement, he ruled out “Warriors” as a candidate.

Currently used by the Golden State Warriors of the NBA, it presents a suitable name for Washington. Though a relatively neutral term, Wright stated that it closely correlates to their former name and Native American themes. In their continued efforts to rebrand, they want to break away from that completely. He closed his statement saying that the team has narrowed it down to a shortlist of names.

“We are now down to a short list of final names based on our strategic approach, research process, and insight phase. We will continue to rely upon the insight and support of many of you as it moves forward to a final decision. As a team, we are confident that our new brand identity will honor our legacy and lead us into our future as a franchise.”

As far as what names they have to choose from go, that remains unknown. However, based on what Wright has said, a decision may soon come down. Washington will enter the 2021 NFL season as the defending NFC East champion. While this issue concerning their team name goes on, the focus for the players and coaches remains on the field. They look to become the first repeat division champion since the Eagles of 2001-2004.

Washington Football Team Name Change Origin

Known as the “Redskins” for their entire existence, the Washington Football team faced much criticism for the name’s racially offensive nature. They were often called upon to change the name but wouldn’t budge. That all ended in 2020. Amidst a strong social movement pushing against racial inequality across the world, the team finally gave in. Washington announced last July that they had retired the “Redskins” name.

Other teams such as the MLB’s Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves and the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks have stuck with their names despite receiving similar complaints of racial insensitivity. Whether that changes soon as it has in Washington, we’ll have to wait and find out.
