The Seahawks have parted ways with Aldon Smith. The longtime defensive pass-rusher signed a one-year deal with Seattle this past offseason. Around the time of his signing, Smith faced allegations of second-degree battery. He turned himself into the authorities and eventually earned a release on bond. The Seahawks, who were quickly made aware of the situation, responded in short on the matter. Smith’s arraignment will take place later this month.

Aldon Smith received a conditional reinstatement to the NFL in 2020. He then signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys. His return marked the first time he’d play a down in the league since 2015. He had gotten into trouble quite often throughout his early stint. The league responded with multiple disciplinary measures, ultimately leading to his indefinite suspension in 2015.

With these latest allegations, the potential for another suspension takes shape. After all, Smith’s reinstatement was conditional. That said, and all things considered, he may not have received playing time regardless of the Seahawks’ decision. With the regular season about a month away, Smith finds himself on the outskirts again. Should the league take disciplinary action against him, we may not see him retake the field for a while longer.

Aldon Smith’s NFL career

Aldon Smith had a short stint with the Seahawks, and it only adds to the somber tone that applies to his NFL career. At one point, Smith headlined a stout defensive unit in San Fransisco. He played a significant role in the 49ers’ development into a Super Bowl contender during the early 2010s. While he would produce at a high level, problems off the field would be his undoing. Multiple arrests regarding illegal firearm possession and alcohol-related issues piled up. No matter what the team or the league did, Smith found himself in the same spot repeatedly.

It all came to ahead in the Summer of 2015. After another arrest for a DUI (Driving Under Influence), the 49ers released him. Aldon Smith went on to sign a deal with the Raiders shortly after and played nine games for them before the NFL handed him a one-year suspension. The league did not grant him reinstatement until 2020.
