Should the Seahawks Keep Russell Wilson?

Russell Wilson said a couple of years ago he wanted to play until his mid-40s. After seeing what Tom Brady has done in his early 40�s, it is not unusual for a Quarterback to make a similar statement. Drew Brees, who just turned 41 this year, signed on for another two years with the New Orleans Saints. Brees and Brady are playing great at their age and are still effective. Wilson, who is turning 32 in November, has not missed an NFL game to date. Therefore, he can likely withstand another decade of play.�

Wilson signed a new contract in 2019 that would keep him around until 2023 with a no-trade clause. However, Russel Wilson�s future with the Seattle Seahawks is uncertain. Wilson recently is dealing with trade rumors. He has had an incredible resume with the Seahawks and had another terrific season last year. The question becomes how valuable is Russell Wilson to the Seahawks?

Trade Rumors

In 2018, there was a report stating Wilson was in trade talks for the possible first pick.� The Browns were the team that the Seahawks had discussions with. If the trade happened, the Seahawks were probably eyeing Baker Mayfield, a younger Quarterback. Thankfully for the Seahawks franchise and their fans, this did not happen.�

NBC Sports� Brian Noe proposed the idea that Wilson should be traded to get Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL draft. Not only is it disrespectful to Wilson but also profoundly hopeful that the Seahawks would give him up.�

Baker Mayfield hasn�t done well with the Browns so far, and Trevor Lawrence hasn�t proven himself in the NFL. Wilson brings more value to the Seahawks than Mayfield and Lawrence would suggest.

Wilson is a franchise Quarterback. He has been consistent enough to get a team to the playoffs and Super Bowl appearances. To suggest that Wilson should be traded is ridiculous considering his body of work. He is in the prime of his career who can produce big numbers just like he has in the past.

How Valuable Has Wilson Been with the Seahawks?

Wilson�s resume with the Seahawks has been impressive thus far. 

Wilson is 2^nd to Brady with the most wins (86-41) since 2012, the year he entered the NFL. That is 14 more wins than the third-place Aaron Rodgers. The Seahawks franchise has had 64 wins in the previous eight seasons before Wilson. Wilson has won 22 more games in the same amount of time, which is at least worth two more years of play.

Furthermore, the Seahawks franchise has appeared in three Super Bowls. Two of them are with Wilson at Quarterback. One of the Super Bowl trips resulted in a win that came in 2013. Wilson threw for 206 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He had a passer rating of 123.1 opposite of legendary Peyton Manning�s 73.5 passer rating, whom he outdueled.  

To top it all off, Wilson is the all-time passing leader for the franchise.

The Seahawks were 30^th of 32 teams in pass blocking offense this past season. Still, Wilson managed an 11-5 record with 31 TDs and the most passing yards since 2016 with 4110 passing yards. 

Wilson can create under pressure given a bad offensive line, which is a testament to how good he is. Not many Quarterbacks can perform as well as he does in light of these circumstances.
