Stephon Gilmore’s House is on the Market, Stirs Trade Rumors

Oct 18, 2020; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore (24) leaves the field after warming up before a game against the Denver Broncos at Gillette Stadium.

The New England Patriots have had a rough start to their first season in the post-Tom Brady era, especially for their standards. They own an underwhelming 2-4 record and sit in third place in the AFC East. And to make matters worse for Patriot fans, reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore could be on his way out of Foxborough. According to Tom Curran, the cornerback has reportedly listed his house on the market, with offers due next Tuesday just one hour after the trade deadline.

Albert Breer of Monday Morning Quarterback also revealed that the Patriots have an interest in trading Gilmore if the price is right. His contract is set to expire after the 2021 season, where hell likely be due for a big payday.

Would a Gilmore Trade be Worth it?

This situation with Gilmore’s house could be a mere coincidence, but a trade involving him would make sense for the Pats. Their lowly start to the season and lack of current talent could trigger the front office to consider rebuilding for the future.

If thats the case, a 30-year old cornerback like Gilmore will garner plenty of long-term value on the trade block. Contrarily, the Patriots would gain very little from holding onto him if they wish to rebuild. As good as he is, Gilmore won’t suddenly turn the Pats into legitimate Super Bowl contenders anytime soon.

While these reports might be nothing more than rumors, a Gilmore trade is worth thinking about if Bill Belichick cant turn things around this season. Its odd to think of the Patriots ever being in a rebuilding state, but that might be their best decision moving forward.

Following an embarrassing loss to San Francisco in Week 7, the Patriots will look to get back on track next week against the division rival Bills. A fourth straight loss would make a Gilmore trade all the more likely.
