NFL player and Ravens third-string quarterback Trace McSorley is a hot topic on TikTok. In just his second year in the league, he has catapulted to viral fame after a student-made song titled ‘Trace McSorley’ was made.
The song dropped two years ago in August of 2018, but a remix mashup with Coolio’s ‘Gangster’s Paradise’ transformed the music into a TikTok staple.
Origins
On August 9th, 2018, a user by the name of “Matty Fresh” uploaded the Trace McSorley official music video. At the time, McSorley was a senior, towards the end of his impressive college days. 2016 saw him lead Penn State to the Big Ten Championship, while 2017 followed with a Fiesta Bowl win. Throughout his Penn State career, McSorley gained a massive following on campus as he propelled the Nittany Lions back onto the headlines of College Football.
Matty Fresh, aka Matt Friedel, made the song as a student at Penn State. Responding to the hype of his school’s quarterback, Friedel dropped the song as a fun tribute. The video’s description even reads, “This song was created as a tribute to Penn State’s record-shattering All-American quarterback.”
Following the resurgence of his song, Friedel took to Twitter to clarify a few acts and show his love for McSorley’s play.
After high schooler David James remixed the song on his @sorley_yt TikTok account, a trend was born.
The meme grew so popular that even the NFL took notice. Their social media team hopped onto the trend with their very own McSorely video posted to the official NFL TikTok account.
As with all trends, this will certainly die out with the rest. But in the meantime, Trace McSorley is the NFL’s most trending QB with only one NFL snap to his name.
