
The New York Islanders have moved onto the round of 16 after defeating the Florida Panthers in four games. The Islanders have become the second team to move onto the round of 16. They beat the Florida Panthers 3-1 in their best of five series.
With the expectations for the Panthers this season being relatively high, a qualifying round exit is disappointing for the club.
In the offseason, Florida shelled out $70 million to acquire former Verona Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky.
Their standout captain Alexsander Barkov led the way, and Jonathan Huberdeau was having a breakout year. The Panthers were likely shooting for at least the first round. Not being able to make it to the first round is certainly a letdown.
Before the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Panthers were sitting tenth in the Eastern Conference. During a typical year, Florida wouldn’t have made the playoffs. Under the new playoff regime for 2020, they were able to sneak in.
The New York Islanders will now face the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the NHL Playoffs, after the Hurricanes eliminated the New York Rangers in their Qualifying Round matchup.
