The Washington Capitals are hiring Peter Laviolette as their next head coach, according to Pierre Lebrun. The 55-year-old will be the 19th coach in franchise history. The deal is rumored to be for three years.
Laviolette has an abundance of coaching experience in the NHL. He has previously been the coach of the Islanders, Hurricanes, Flyers, and, most recently, the Nashville Predators.
Also, the veteran head coach led the Predators to the Stanley Cup Final in the 2016-17 season. The Predators lost to the Penguins in six games in that series.
Onto the next chapter in his career with Washington, Laviolette is hoping to lead them to another Stanley Cup.
After winning the Stanley Cup in 2017, the Capitals have followed that up with two straight disappointing seasons. A first-round exit followed by a second-round departure.
Laviolette is hoping to change that trend next season, as the new head coach.
