Italian giants AC Milan want to bring Philippe Coutinho to the San Siro. Coutinho is said to be interested in a return to Serie A, and Barcelona is looking to sell the player. According to Sky Sports in Germany. Coutinho began his European career in Serie A with AC’s rivals Inter. But managed just 47 appearances across three seasons before moving to Liverpool.
While at Liverpool, Coutinho established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League. He was crucial to Liverpool’s return to the top of English football under Jurgen Klopp. After 54 goals across five and half seasons in England, Coutinho earned himself a move to Barcelona. The Catalan club agreeing a £142 million deal with Liverpool, who paid just £8.5 million for Coutinho back in 2013.
Coutinho played a crucial role for Barcelona as the club won back-to-back La Liga titles in 2018 & 2019. However, Coutinho was still loaned out to Bayern Munich, ahead of the 2019/20 season. Following a successful spell in which he helped the club win a treble of league, cup & Champions League. The player returned to Barcelona for the 2020/21 season.
Why AC Milan want Coutinho
A knee injury meant Coutinho played just 14 times last season. But at 29, he still has many good years ahead of him. Milan has already added goalkeeper Mike Maignan (who won the league in France with Lille last season) and Fikayo Tomori & Olivier Giroud from Chelsea. As the club look to bolster their squad ahead of return to the Champions League. Their first appearance in the competition since the 2013/14 season.
Milan finished second behind Inter in Serie A last term and view Coutinho as a direct replacement for Hakan Calhanoglu. The forward left the club for Inter following the expiration of his contract in June. Barca will be taking a huge loss after paying out over £140 million for Coutinho back in 2018. But clearing his wages off the books will provide huge relief to the club’s current financial woes.
If Milan wants this deal to happen, they will just need the player to agree. The new-look AC Milan could provide the ideal platform for Philippe Coutinho to re-invigorate his career.
