The award for the year’s best player came down to two people, Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi. On November 29, 2021, Lionel Messi claimed his seventh Ballon d’Or. Many players in the industry are not in favor of Messi collecting the prize once again. Although Lewandowski misses out on the award, his season was one to remember. Bayern Munich player Alphonso Davies speaks out on a live stream to share his thoughts.

“Lewandowski deserved to win it. At least give the guy the Ballon d’Or from last year. You can’t tell me… oh my god I’d be so mad man. I’d probably punch something.”

The award ceremony was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and Lewandowski was the clear winner. If he is in possession of the 2020 prize, it wouldn’t be as big a deal if he didn’t win it this year. But seeing Lewandowski without a Ballon d’Or doesn’t make sense for most people.

Lewandowski’s case for the Ballon d’Or

Lewandowski is one of the most consistent players in soccer at the moment. He has 38 goals in 30 league games, averaging a goal every 66 minutes. Lewandowski also leads the European continent in goals and has the highest goals and assist ratio. He holds the current golden boot for most goals and overtakes Gerd Müller’s iconic goalscoring record in the Bundesliga. However, Poland had a disappointing run at the Euros, and Bayern Munich was out of the Champions League early. As a result, his chances for the award are minimized.

Although Lewandowski finishes second for the Ballon d’Or, this year is one of his best. Lionel Messi grabs the award for his iconic performance at Copa America and finally finds glory with Argentina. This international achievement is the number one reason why Messi claims the Ballon d’Or over Lewandowski.
