Arjen Robben announced on his Twitter account the decision to retire from football after 20 years, ending his career on Groningen FC. The 37-year old will hang his boots due to injuries that wont allow him to continue playing. Last season Robben joined Groningen FC, his first professional team, and could only play seven games.
“Dear football friends, I have decided to stop my active football career. A very difficult choice. I want to thank everyone for all the heartwarming support! Regards, Arjen”ArJen Robben
Looking back on the past season, I have to come to the honest conclusion that the number of match minutes is disappointing. I knew in advance that this could happen, but I took up the challenge and gave everything to make it succeed.”Arjen Robben on his short season with Groningen
However, despite Robbens wish to continue playing, he will respect his body and retire from football, as the decision to quit is “fair and realistic.” Nevertheless, hell continue his support of Groningen FC, not as a player this time, but as a fan.
The world of football will remember his best moments: winning the Champions League and the Bundesliga eight times with Bayern; winning the Premier League twice with Chelsea; conquering La Liga during his short tenure with Real Madrid; winning his first competition with PSV Eindhoven. Worth pointing out his representation of the Dutch national team, playing 96 games and scoring 37 goals, participating in three Euros (2004, 2008, 2012) and three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014).
Robben scored a total of 209 goals during his career and contributed with 166 assists, remembered for his most particular trait of dragging the ball to the right side of the field, proceeding to cut left, and shooting the ball with his powerful left foot.
Its unclear what the future holds for Robben, but fans will keep a close eye on the epitome of an inverted winger and one of the best players ever to play the game.
