FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi agreed to a new contract that would see the Argentinian remain in the Camp Nou for the next five years. In addition, the new contract would reduce Leo´s salary significantly. This reduction would help the club register Messi and their other summer signings. However, various sources have told ESPN that Messi´s wage is still an obstacle, and the club continues to struggle to make room for Messi and the new signings.

FC Barcelona and its board have done a great job this summer. Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Kun Aguero, and Emerson Royal have all been signed for just 9 million euros. On top of that, the club was able to bring back Lionel Messi for another 5 years. Unfortunately, all these signings have led to salary issues with most players, including the new ones. Barcelona must reduce its expenses before August 31 to ensure that they comply with La Liga´s spending limits next season. Nonetheless, the club wants everything resolved by August 15th, when they kick off their season opener at home against Real Sociedad.

Unfortunately for the Catalans, La Liga president Javier Tebas will not relax its rules for Barcelona.

¨No, I won't [turn a blind eye] for Messi, it's impossible. There are many workers [at La Liga] and in the economic control [department] as well,¨Javier Tebas on the Messi situation

The words of Tebas have put Barcelona with their backs against the wall. As a result, the club must reduce its expenses or see Messi unable to play for the club until January 2022, as Getafe midfielder Pedro Leon happened in 2014.

What can Barcelona do to avoid this?

According to ESPN, the wage cuts of Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto, and Jordi Alba are not enough. The club still needs to take care of the wages of other big earners. The quickest way would be to deal Griezzman to Atletico Madrid in exchange for Saul; however, the deal has recently been stalled. Other options are to deal the salaries of Umtiti, Pjanic, and Coutinho to the clubs. Barcelona has five weeks to deal with this situation; Time will tell if fans will enjoy Messi magic in the coming weeks.
