Jose Mourinho blames the team for celebrating too early. Mourinho also blames the French coach, Didier Deschamps, for making woeful substitutions.
“Then I think they had a little bit of fun and made one mistake I think about many, many times. When you go to extra-time, when you are in a game where there is the possibility of extra-time, you have to be very careful with the changes you make."Mourinho's comments to TalkSport
These comments came following Switzerland's shocking victory over France, who many considered strong contenders for the title. Mourinho believed that Antoine Griezmann, who was arguably France's best player on the pitch, should never have been taken off. Furthermore, he also took the opportunity to mention that bringing on Moussa Sissoko, a Tottenham player, was a mistake.
“When you make a change on minute 89 and take one of your best players, Griezmann, that was playing amazing well and make that change – Griezmann for Sissoko – if it is a points game without extra-time, that is okay."
“When there is the prospect of extra-time, that’s a big gamble... you want to shoot yourself because you left Griezmann out of that extra time".Many consider his comments about Sissoko a personal attack, as Jose was recently sacked by Tottenham.
Perhaps a reason behind Jose's harsh remarks was Deschamps' response to the comments made by Mourinho before the tournament began. The French manager believed that it was unjust for Jose to put a huge amount of pressure on the team. He claimed to expect trophies out of Jose's Tottenham side, which did not deliver. Deschamps and Mourinho have been feuding since 2004, with this being the latest chapter.
However, Jose Mourinho also made sure to give the Swiss team their due respect. Mourinho added that the team should be proud of their accomplishments. The Swiss get to go home with people recognizing what they did was important. Unlike France, Switzerland is not a team full of stars. Coah Vladimir Petkovic, deserves praise for defeating the World Champions.
