Ben Mendy has a trial date in English court set for August 27th. He faces four rape charges along with an additional sexual assault charge.
In addition to facing the charges, Manchester City also suspended Mendy. The club announced the suspension following news of his arrest.
The fullback currently sits behind jail bars as he awaits his trial. Cheshire police made an official announcement regarding the case via their website.
"Benjamin Mendy, aged 27, has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021."Cheshire Police
Last November, Police detained an unnamed Premier League player on suspicion of rape. Shortly after, police released the player, but the investigation continued. The player's identity never came to light, but it is now believed that the player was, in fact, Mendy.
The charges came seemingly out of nowhere as all seemed normal for Mendy. In City's opening match against Spurs, he made the bench for their following win against Norwich.
Mendy has been at the club since 2017, winning 3 Premier League titles along the way. He also won the 2018 World Cup as a part of France's squad that took the trophy in Russia.
While he never consistently started at City, Mendy remained a prime option as a backup fullback and racked up 75 appearances for the club across 4 full seasons.
However, Mendy's time at the club and potentially within the sport came to an end. Even his time as a free man is in jeopardy.
As of now, he hasn't released an official statement as he awaits his court date. Cheshire police also reminded people that he is innocent until proven guilty in a lawful trial. They also want a fair trial despite Mendy's celebrity status.
"It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice ongoing proceedings."Cheshire Police
The identities of Mendy's 3 alleged victims remain anonymous. Police stated that all were over the age of 16, the UK's age of consent.
Until now, transfer rumors remained the biggest headlines regarding City over the summer. That is until the news of Mendy's arrest broke. With Mendy gone, the team still hopes to repeat as league champions.
Currently, no players or staff from the club voiced their opinions. The only available words out of the club came on the club's website, which was short and blunt.
News of Mendy's arrest comes at the same time as City's transfer saga with Ronaldo. For now, Mendy's full effect on City remains unknown as he awaits trial.
