Manchester United and Real Madrid have agreed in principle to a £41 million deal, including add-ons for defender Raphael Varane. Having completed the signing of Jadon Sancho for £73 million last week. The purchase of Varane represents a further statement of intent for United ahead of the new season.
A club statement said:
"Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of France's international defender and World Cup Winner, Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalized."Manchester United
Although Manchester United finished second in the league last season, they were 12 points adrift of champions Manchester City and have not won a trophy since 2017. The addition of Varane is a step towards bridging the gap.
Why United want Raphael Varane
Varane has established himself as one of the world's best defenders since joining Real back in 2011. While in Madrid, he has made over 350 appearances and won 18 major honors. Including three La Liga titles & four Champions League. He also started every game as France won the 2018 World Cup.
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire missed the final four league games of last season and the Europa League final, in which United lost on penalties. His absence left a hole in the team. But in Varane, they are adding another experienced leader. His size, speed & athleticism will no doubt compliment the Manchester United captain. But United could now afford to rest Maguire. A luxury they could ill afford over the past couple of seasons.
"They are buying one of the best central defenders in Europe. He has been fantastic since day one. He has all the attributes you need. In terms of quality, I do not think there are much better than Varane."Spanish football expert Terry Gibson speaking on the deal
If the deal goes through as expected. Varane's first competitive action would likely come in United's Premier League opener against Leeds United. August 14th at Old Trafford.
