Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has enjoyed a solid start to his first full season as manager. However, he knows results are not everything when you are managing a team like Paris Saint-Germain. The 49-year-old often receives praise for his managerial style, but the expectations in Paris are a bit different.
Pochettino was speaking ahead of PSG’s league match against defending Ligue 1 champions, Lille. He admitted that despite sitting top of the league and their Champions League group, the team is still looking to improve their performances.
“We’re not just looking to get the result. We’re top of the league and in our Champions League group. But that’s not enough. We need to keep improving, to play better and put on more of a show. That’s what Paris Saint-Germain is. It’s not just about winning games. But also about putting on a show which corresponds to what the club has invested and what it demands.”Mauricio Pochettino
Mauricio Pochettino has guided PSG to 9 wins from their opening 11 league games. They sit seven points clear at the top of Ligue 1 on 28 points, and the Argentinian knows he still does not have the team playing how he would like.
The club is arguably the most devasting forward line in world football in Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi. Pundits and fans alike will expect a sea of goals and attacking spark every time the team takes to the field, and Pochettino wants to get to that level.
Pochettino also responded to comments from his predecessor Thomas Tuchel about his own time in charge of PSG. However, the Argentinian insisted on speaking about his own experiences with the club.
“I am someone with a lot of respect for everything, I come from a culture of education and respect. I will never try to judge somebody until I know them. Like with clubs. I have known PSG for 20 years, but also for 10 months.
I will not give my opinion on how my predecessor felt, I can only speak from my experiences. My job is to coach and take technical decisions with my staff. PSG recruited me to coach 33 players. To define a playing philosophy. The pitch is my responsibility.”Mauricio Pochettino
Things appear to be clicking for Pochettino in Paris, and with his desire to get the team playing even better, he may have won his first major trophy as a manager come to the end of the season.
