Lionel Messi played a professional game with a shirt that was not FC Barcelona for the first time in his football career. Last night, the Argentinean made his official debut with French giants Paris Saint-Germain in a comfortable 0-2 win against Reims. PSG´s new number 30 only played half an hour in that game. Nevertheless, it was a historical debut that no one in the world wanted to miss, not even Barcelona and Spanish fans.

Lionel Messi´s Ligue 1 debut has reportedly smashed the previous most-viewed French League match in Spanish viewing history. Kosmos, Gerard Pique´s company, bought the rights of Ligue 1 and 2 to sublicense them to TV channels and streaming services. The coverage began yesterday when Paris Saint-Germain faced Reims in the third game of the season. Despite Messi´s limited time on the pitch, many Spanish football fans decided to tune in to watch Messi make his debut with his new club.

Viewership numbers

Messi´s PSG debut was the first time the same content was broadcasted live on two different platforms in Spain. Twitch and Telecinco (National TV). According to Kosmos, the total audience reached an impressive 6.7 million on both platforms. However, national television had four times more viewers than Twitch.

Data provided by Barlovento Communication suggests that an average of 2 million people watched the game on national television. While an average of 300 thousand tuned in to Ibai Llanos´ Twitch channel to stream the game. Both platforms cannot be compared. However, Spain´s Mediaset chain achieving higher performance than Ibai Llanos´ Twitch channel will add to the unsettled dispute between the streamer and Spanish media.

Ligue 1 matches will continue to appear in Spain on national television and Twitch on certain occasions. With Messi likely to play 90 minutes in his second PSG appearance after the International break. Do not be surprised if the new Spanish viewing record is broken once again.
