Riyad Mahrez isn’t often one for controversial statements. However, his thoughts on Manchester City’s campaign last season certainly rose some eyebrows. Mahrez claimed that City deserved essentially every trophy last year.

“We deserved to win the league, we deserved to win the league cup, [and] we probably deserved to win the FA Cup as well but we didn’t, then obviously it was a big disappointment to lose the final of the CL, which I think we deserved to win as well.”

While the team won both the Carabao Cup and the Premier League, their hopes fell in the Champions League. It was in the final where they lost the final 1-0 to fellow Premier League club Chelsea.

The Algerian winger spoke his thoughts as the new season began August 7th as City once again took on Chelsea. This time in the Community Shield.

Mahrez’s statement seems surprising considering his humble beginnings in the Premier League. Following a great few seasons with Leicester City, including the fateful 2016 Premier League title, Mahrez moved onto City.

While many regard Leicester as a more respectable club, Manchester City has by far a bigger influence in the world of football.

Over this past decade, Manchester City became the “villains” of the Premier League as their ownership changed. Prior to the switch in the early 2010s, City was a mostly mediocre club. The club played well enough to avoid relegation into the lower leagues, but it almost never challenged for trophies of any sort.

This changed as Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed took the reigns at the club. With his massive funding, the club changed its identity almost overnight.

In recent years, the club has dominated the Premier League, winning 3 out of the last 4 titles. Many fans understandably came to dislike the club for its lack of history and the money well that it always draws from in order to win.

The recent 100 million transfer of Jack Grealish to the club sparked even more controversy at the club. Many saw the move as unfair due to its record price. However, it seems as if Mahrez and the rest of the club aren’t complaining about the move.

City made the move with the intentions of repeating as title winners and perhaps winning even more based upon Mahrez’s words.
