Just a month after rebranding from Montreal Impact, Montreal CF’s Thierry Henry is out of work. The French manager took it upon himself to resign due to “family reasons.”
His family remains in London, where he starred for Arsenal from 1999-2007. Due to ongoing travel restrictions between North America and Europe preventing him from seeing his children, Henry chose to resign. The French legend put out the following statement via Twitter:
Henry took the reigns in Montreal before the 2020 season. In just one season at the club, he finished 9th place in the Eastern Conference with an 8-13-2 record. Montreal also advanced to the Round of 16 in the “MLS is Back Tournament” that spawned after the pandemic canceled many sports worldwide.
Montreal’s sporting director Olivier Renard supported Henry’s decision thanking him for his time at the club.
“I want to thank him, first of all humanly, because he led by example last year by being away from his family, but also at the sporting level for what we have built together since his arrival.”
Henry first moved to North America in 2010 to join the New York Red Bulls in the MLS. Before his MLS move, Henry enjoyed a decorated career in Europe. He is most known for his time with Arsenal and Barcelona, where he won 4 league titles and a Champions League.
Henry also won the World Cup in 1998 with France.
Upon his return to England, Henry may explore the job market in Europe. Recently, he was heavily linked to the managerial job at AFC Bournemouth in England’s second tier.
