Although some think that Lionel Messi isn’t deserving of the Ballon d’Or, he still has the accomplishments to prove he deserves it. After a 28-year trophyless drought, Argentina finally wins a trophy. This time the Copa America in which Lionel Messi finishes the tournament as the player of the tournament. He also completed the tournament with five assists and created 21 chances for his team, the most out of anyone in the tournament. Lionel Messi also found the back of the net four times, resulting in him being the tournament’s top scorer.
Lionel Messi needed one thing to be able to retire comfortably: finding silverware with Argentina. He has already been a part of a squad that lost three Copa America finals and a World Cup final. It is safe to say that this win with Argentina against Brazil, on Brazilian grounds, was the main reason as to why he won his seventh Ballon d’Or.
