The Washington Football Team is releasing veteran running back Adrian Peterson.

Peterson spent two years in Washington, after signing with them in 2018. He originally signed a one-year deal for $1.015 million, but the Football Team offered him a two-year extension after his 2018 season. The Football Team brought him into Washington after Darrius Guice suffered a torn ACL, and their two backups both went down in the preseason.

In 2018, Peterson amazed everyone with 1,042 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. His eighth and most recent 1,000 yard rushing season.

Struggles After Departing Minnesota

After Peterson left Minnesota, he bounced around. He started by signing with the Saints in 2017. After playing four games with the Saints, the Cardinals traded a conditional sixth-round pick for him. Peterson played six games with the Cardinals and battled a neck injury towards the end of the season. He totaled 529 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Cardinals released Peterson in March of 2018, right before the Football Team signed him in August.

Peterson’s Career

Peterson has established himself as one of the top running backs in league history. He has the fifth-most rushing yards (14,216) of all time. Also, his 111 rushing touchdowns put him at fourth all-time.

Peterson’s highest award was the AP MVP award in 2013. He won this after his near record-breaking 2,097-yard season. Peterson became the 13th running back to win the award.

Besides an MVP award, Peterson made the Pro Bowl seven times and has been named All-Pro four times.

Washington’s Depth at the Position

Peterson becomes the second running back released by the Football Team in less than a month. The Football Team released other running back Darrius Guice in early August after Guice got arrested on domestic violence charges.

Besides, the Football Team still has Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic, Peyton Barber, and Bryce Love. The Redskins drafted Gibson with the 66th pick in this year’s draft.

Peterson continues to prove he can be a starter on a team that needs him. A team may not pick him up right away, but someone may sign him if a running back goes down.

For the Football Team, they open their season in Washington against the Eagles on September 13th.
