LA Lakers Wing Danny Green has expressed that he is unsure about the NBA season’s proposed December starting date. On a podcast for�The Ringer, Green stated that he would be surprised to see players restart so soon.
“I think most guys � if we say we’re starting in December � I think they will be like I’m not gonna be there,” said Green.
Green acknowledged that many of the teams have been out of action for up to seven months. However, he says that while they may be anxious to get back on the floor, teams who went deep into the playoffs may not share the same perspective.
In the interview, Green also discussed the possible ways of the league starting up. He stated that there were discussions that have involved multiple different options. These include having several regional bubbles or another full bubble. Green also voiced his wishes for them to play in the arenas again, potentially at reduced capacity.
“A lot of us are begging for it, and the league is begging for it,” said Green. “It also makes sense for TV deals, money deals. All of that makes sense to at least have arenas open, with at least half the fans. But if we start before 2021, I think it will be very tough for arenas to be open.”
Given that the NBA bubble in Disney saved around $1.5 billion in league revenue, the league would likely not hesitate to put another one to use. This would be in a worst-case scenario; however, having fans in attendance would be huge from the financial aspect.
Danny Green has one more season left on his $30 million deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. At 33 years of age, he is heading towards the tail end of his career.
