Will GTA 6 Be Cancelled Due to the Layoffs by their Publisher?

Take-Two Interactive, better known as the publisher of GTA 6, will lay off five percent of its workforce, which translates to about 580 workers. CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed this in an end-of-business SEC filing. As a result, fans are worried that GTA 6 will be affected by the layoffs done by their publisher.

The company wanted to lessen its expenses “for the coming years.” Hence, it canceled several projects, reduced office space, and laid off employees. This process will incur around $200 million in charges. The majority ($140 million) was due to project cancellations, while the rest ($25-35 million) was due to employee severance and other related costs.

This move by Take-Two has been in the works since February. Back then, Zelnick was optimistic and assured everyone they had “no current plans” for layoffs as it would be the hardest thing to do. Perhaps, at the end of the day, Zelnick and Take-Two Interactive had no choice but to do the unthinkable.

What happens to GTA 6?

However, sources confirmed that Take-Two Interactive will not cancel GTA 6. The company is currently developing the game.

However, the major layoffs will certainly impact GTA 6’s development process and release date. Fewer people and teams are working on the game; thus, it’s unsurprising that they will delay it until 2025-2026.

Despite these cuts, Take-Two is still making financially strategic moves. Previously, they acquired Gearbox Studio, which created Borderlands, for $460 million. In 2022, they also merged with Zynga.

Hopefully, the company will experience an influx in profit once they release GTA 6. This will stabilize their remaining employees and allow them to improve their current and future games.
