Victor Wembanyama had a chance to perform with Drake onstage during his tour last year. However, he turned him down because he couldn’t bring any teammates.

Drake offered the 20-year-old rookie last year to join him on his tour. The artist tends to bring athletes to his tours and wanted the French phenom to join him. JJ Redick talks about the opportunity on the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast.
Redick talks about sources from the San Antonio Spurs and how loyal the young big man is. The musician offered to bring the rookie onstage during the preseason since he was visiting Austin, Texas, for the tour.
“The stories I heard coming out of the Spurs camp, like even early in the season where there was a Drake concert in Austin and he got asked to come up on stage. ‘Cause Drake was doing that with a bunch of NBA guys this off season.”

However, Wembanyama had a condition before he’d say yes to the offer. He wanted his teammates to join him on the stage if he said yes. Drake’s team turned down the idea for whatever reason. Thus, this prompted the Spurs player to decline the offer.
This seems like unusual behavior, considering the musician’s popularity in the scene. However, this would have significantly boosted the rookie’s career, and he’d get to hang out with Drake.
Instead, he said no and kept loyal to his teammates. Teammates whom he hadn’t even played with and had just newly met, as this was in the preseason.
“Wemby was like, ‘Can my teammates come up on stage with me?’ And Drake’s camp was like, ‘No.’ And he’s like, ‘Then I don’t want to do it.’ What 19-year-old kid doesn’t want to go up on stage with Drake?”

Low Maintenance Kings
Redick appreciates how Wembanyama is similar to Stephen Curry and his predecessor, Tim Duncan. Both players don’t usually trend on social media for the wrong reasons.
“There’s been anomalies for star players in that they have been low maintenance. There’s like Steph and there’s like Tim Duncan. Wemby’s one of those guys.”

Ultimately, it showcases the rookie’s incredible attitude towards his teammates. Moreover, it’s not the only time he’s shown how mature he is for a young player. He even says he sees no reason to consume illicit substances and alcohol.
With how he’s treating his career, it seems the young player has quite the future ahead of him in the NBA. However, he’ll need to keep this mentality up even to surpass many of the NBA’s greats.
